Check this out if you want to upgrade how you use google forms. Having done this myself this technique is not for new google users. You should be reasonably confident in your use of google forms before trying this out. Otherwise it is a great tool to support the learning of your students. This article/tutorial is from the Shake Up Learning blog written by Kasey Bell from Texas.
This is a good article written by the editors of MindShift, about skills that we often overlook in relation to teaching in a BYOD class. While some of the examples are Primary based, the concepts are the same and are worth considering in your teaching.
"The beginning of the school year is a time to set the tone for a student’s learning experience, including what teachers expect from students and families. But that first week of school is also the time to teach valuable learning skills that will be used throughout the year. Alan November, a former teacher turned lecturer, consultant and author, challenged teachers to rethink how they start the school year by outlining skills that are crucial to students to learn in the first five days of school. He shared his vision at the International Society for Technology in Education conference in Philadelphia." To read the whole article click here.
The session included some Senior Leadership, Heads of Departments and a few other keen staff. Below is the conversation that occurred. It is structured by questions which the attendees then answer.
This is an important read for anyone in Secondary Education. Frances Valintine is Founder of The Mind Lab by Unitec.
Here is the beginning of the article. Click here for the full article "The inevitable has happened. That slow-moving tsunami of 21st Century students have finally navigated the education terrain of the primary school sector, and as of next year the first of these students will spill into our secondary schools. The effect of these students has been predicted, researched and analysed over the decade but the moment of truth will only be realised when the students first arrive at high school in 2016. Forget the so-called Millenial babies, 21st-century learners and digital natives. Heading the charge of education transformation is the new frontier of learners. These twelve-year-olds will look very much the same as the previous generations of high school students, but their arrival will be felt like a punch between the eyes. They are a formidable force of young change agents who have never experienced a traditional class." Click here for the full article

If you are considering getting involved or just watching an Edchatnz session or other similar session click here for some details of what to expect. Otherwise here is a short breakdown of what happens: There is one person facilitating the online discussion. Approx every 7mins she/he will pose a question on Twitter using the hashtag associated with that chat. e.g. #Edchatnz. E.g Q1: What is E Learning to you? Then everyone attending the discussion will post their answer on Twitter. Eg A1: xxxxxxx As you go you can read and reply to other people's answers to challenge each other's thinking or agree and share experiences. And then you move into the next question. |
