QR CODES
This is a QR code. They are being used everywhere for marketing purposes, however they are really useful in education also to help make your lessons interesting. Your code can be plain text (this doesn't require students to use wifi), or it can be images, video's, links to websites/youtube video's etc. |
How to make QR Codes etcYou need to ask students to download a QR CODE READER APP either onto their tablets or smartphones prior to your lesson. There are plenty of free ones available. Do this prior to your lesson.
I think it is best to use smartphones and tablets for these tasks however I have found a QR code scanner for PC's (they do not seem as available for laptops). I tested it out on my laptop and it works. Click here to go to the site to download it. Go down towards the bottom and under the Free QR Code Scanner title will be 'Desktop QR Scanner' in orange letters. Click on this, then click on Start Up and it will download to your computer. When it asks you to select a camera, choose the HP webcam. Then it is as easy as holding the QR code infront of your camera and it will scan it. |
Examples from WGHSSimon Whittam created one for Social Studies for students. The last QR code on the bottom righthand side of the page has the questions that the students have to answer.
The Physical Education Department use them for scavenger hunts. We found using plain text easier for us as wifi around the outside of buildings was temperamental. Here is an example of one for Outdoor Education
